In her statement Echol's ex, Deanna Holcomb was asked if Echols had any special places and she said sewers or manholes.

Out of curiosty, does anyone know if places around the area were ever searched?

Back in 'the day' (the day being what I call everyones' preteen to teen years) the kids used to go exploring in the storm drains and their was invariably the half assed graffiti of pentagrams, snappy evil slogans, and whatnots down there. I wouldn't be surprised to find out Damien had a hideaway in the sewers cause plenty of teenagers use them for hidey holes when they need to get away from it all or what have you.
I'd be interested to hear a confirmation on that.

That's interesting Macha!
I bet they'd be a good hiding place.

Maybe Kitty knows about them?

"good hiding place"

That's what I was thinking. Good place to stash stuff and usually not a place an adult likes to venture in unless they have to, well at least I wouldn't want to.

Hmm, I don't know, Todd might though.  I've got to run some errands over in WM Friday (Saturday if I decide to be lazy) and I'll drive over by Lakeshore to see what's what.
I've never noticed the sewer system, but I have noticed there use a lot of drainage ditches (like the one the boys were found in.) Plus the whole bayou system was created for drainage.

The lake at Lakeshore also serves as drainage.  Last summer when we barely had rain, the Lakeshore lake made news because the water level had dropped so low there were thousands of dead fish on the surface and on the shore.

I should probably go by the Broadway trailer park area too because that's where Damien lived at the time.

Thanks for the offer Kitty but don't go out of your way. It's just one of those questions that makes me go hummmmmmmm

If you find yourself in the area or out of curiosty , I'd like to hear what ya think if you did venture around.

Well, I was in West Memphis yesterday. I didn't drive over to Lakeshore because it was raining, but I was over on Broadway (the street the Broadway trailer park is on.)

I think the storm drains are a very old style that haven't been replaced.  I tried to do an internet search on what to call them, but all I could find was a story about how an Iowa postman got stuck in one!  Basically there is a vertical opening in the curb.  The height depends on how high the curb is.  I saw some that were probably 6-8 inches, but others looked like about 10 inches easy.  The smaller storm drains are about 4 feet wide, but the larger ones looked between 6 and 8 feet wide.  There isn't an opening in the street with a screen or grate over it.  There is only a slot in the curb and there is no screen over it, just a wide open hole.

Manhole covers are on the sidewalk above the drain.  There were no manholes in the street.

A thin person or a child could easily slide right down one.  I think the only thing an adult would have to worry about would be getting his head caught.

Thanks for checking it out Kitty, we don't have them here but it sounds like the one in Stephen King's IT.
So I can visualise what you mean.

Thanks Kitty. Some if them sounds like the old neighborhood.

sidenote: I've read It so many times I almost have it memorized. At least once every couple of years. I did care much for the movie version but I love Tim Curry

Hey, I took some pictures of sewers on Monday.  I'll be posting them either tonight or tomorrow.

A new thought - Do you think instead of "sewers or manholes" she may have been talking about culverts?

could be? I'm thinking about the missing trenchcoats and thinking if they didn't burn them , they had to have gotten rid of them somewhere ya know..

It is suspicious that Echols and Co were seen all the time with these coats but after the murders what happened to them?

I spoke to my dad about where to get a map of the sewer systems, culverts, etc. for West Memphis.  He said they should have them with the City's engineering department, but the quality would most likely be poor.  Also, as I am a "non-technical" person, they might not let me access them.  However, since he focuses on urban hydrology for a living, he'd get them for me or get his friend, another engineer, to do it.

He also suggested something might be available with USGG.  Anyway, he's checking on it for me.
