When people regret something, they usually want to tell someone about it to make themselves feel better. I'm not saying they would broadcast it to the whole prison system. I am saying maybe they make a friend, and maybe they tell that person.
If they were going to confess, this seems like a perfect situation because they had little to lose by confessing.
