To me, this was an act of genius on Gitchell's part. And it aparently worked:
Jessie had been taken in for questioning, mostly, to find out what he knew about Damien.
As we all know, Gitchell got more then he bargened for.

Gitchell had prepared a tape recorded snipet from an interview with little Aaron Hutchinson
and played it for Jessie hoping for a reaction.

Acording to Gitchell, he played the taped portion, " nobody knows what happened but me" to
Jessie and he (Jessie) went into a panic. From the book, "Blood of Innocence", Jessie said,
"I want out of this! I want to tell you everything".
So started the first confession of Jessie Misskelley.

I have always found this to be one of the creepier aspects of this case.
Why do you suppose Jessie reacted so strongly to that recording?
Would an innocent person have reacted this way?
Would an innocent person say "I want out of this! I want to tell you everything"?

Does anyone know if this was mentioned in the trial? I am looking through Gitchell's testimony, and cant
find it. Can you guys help me out and share your thoughts?  :)

This was in the book, Blood of Innocence?  I havent read the book, was that the book written by Mara? That comment right there, "I want out of this," is a big red flag. Your right, If he was innocent, why would he say that.

Nope, this was written by Guy Reel, Marc Perrusquia and Bartholomew Sullivan.
I cant get past the first 2 pages of Mara's book w/o getting upset and having to put it down.
I think these guys were investigative jurnalists and followed the case from the begining.
The book is pretty much un-biased.

Ok. I will check it out. I thought also that Mara's book would be for the guilty, so I never wanted to read it. Just giving supporters side of things and Ive already heard their sides. I do not agree with them, so why should I read more of their words. I didnt read Damien's book either. Figured it would just be a whole "poor me" thing, and I do not have any desire to hear him bitch and moan about the treatment he has received or whatever.

I just finished Blood of Innocence last week.  The three writers worked for the Commercial Appeal here in Memphis.  I believe Marc Perrusquia still does, but I don't know about the other two.  I too couldn't get past the second page of Mara's book and didn't want to read Damien's either.

BOI is a quick, easy read.  It refreshed my memory about some stuff and I learned several new things I hadn't seen elsewhere.  Brown Board has an index someone compiled for the book, that was one of my problems with it.

Jessie would have recognized Aaron's voice on the tape. Someone mentioned to me that he was more likely friends with Aaron, not so much Vikki, and that's why he was over there so much.  The more I think about that, the more I tend to agree.  He was known for hanging out with younger kids.

What does it matter if Jessie did recognize Aaron's voice? Gitchell still got the reaction and confession.

Do you think Jessie would have said "I want out of this! I want to tell you everything" if Gitchell played a recording of say a woman with a Brooklyn accent?

Yes, playing the tape worked.  I'm not disputing that.  :dontknow:

I dont understand the point of your question.
Are you inferring that Jessie would have confessed regardles of the tape? I dont think anyone can know that but Jessie.
Sounds like you have some doubts.

I am saying that it's possible he heard his friend on the tape, someone he probably talked to about the murders (because Aaron was their friend) and assumed Aaron had told the police what he knew.  That would explain the dramatic "I want out of this."  So yes, I think it does matter that it was Aaron's voice.  If Gitchell played the voice of a stranger, I don't think he would have gotten the same dramatic response.

Would he have confessed without the tape? Who knows, for the longest time I didn't know about the tape, all I knew was that he confessed.

I have no idea what you think I have doubts about, so I'm not sure how to answer that.

about your doubts. I am new hear, and still trying to learn who everybody is. Please be patient if I ask stupid questions.  :-[

What has always plagued Jessie's confession is how all three profess their innocence, and have continued to do so for over a decade.  Would a guilty person do this for so long?

A guilty person who had the support of thousands?

God forbid you ever become a judge Alex.....

HA HA HA..  I was going to say the same thing Farm.

There are people that have been in prison for 30 year, still professing their innocence, when theres is all kinds of proof of their guilt. Dont they say, somthing like 95% of the prison population profess their innocence? And Im guessing low..
