I was wondering when Griffis was brought in because, if he was brought in after the arrests, this statement that Griffis somehow put a stop to the killings would make no sense at all.  According to Griffis' testimony, however, he heard the details of the case from Ridge, Driver and Fogelman.  But he and Driver were in contact before May 5th and, according to Griffis, they spoke in May 1993 after the murders occurred as well.

So I guess it's possible that Damien blamed Griffis for being caught and said something about "that damn Ohio" cop stopping him.  I'd think he'd blame Driver or Ridge or Gitchell myself if he was guilty and saying something like that after the trial, but I could be wrong.  I just wonder how reliable Griffis is on such matters.  If Fogelman was on record saying Damien said something to the effect about that damn Prosecutor, I'd be more apt to believe it.  But maybe that's just me.

I'm rather suspicious about that statement because it sounds like Griffis is saying Echols said this while still in the courtroom. If it happened while in the courtroom wouldn't more people have come forward and said they heard it? He said "after he got done testifying" . Could be I'm just taken him to literally but I rather stick more to what Ken Lannings has said about the "satanic" crimes then really go by the suppose rampant wide spread "cult crime" stuff Griffis had alleged numerous times.

Sounds like he could have just been trying to toot his own horn a bit for the article and was just adding to the statement one of the girls said they overheard Echols making about "already having 2 more picked out before he turned himself in".
