He is unbelivable.

Shaun White's Olympics 2010 performance was under the radar last night. The Shaun White's Olympics routine had a lot of high expectations, and the snowboarder met them and then some. White was looking for his second straight gold medal in the half-pipe competition, but there really was little competition in this event. The defending champion made that clear early and capped it off with his new signature move. As such, the Shaun White Olympics victory perfectly ended America's big day.

Yesterday brought America's biggest Winter Olympic stars to the forefront as Lindsey Vonn and Shani Davis also fought for gold. Shaun White wouldn't have belonged on that A-list in the past since snowboarding and the half-pipe is relatively new in the Olympics. But the sport is making its mark now in no small part thanks to him.

White's outsized persona, long hair, and dynamic jumps have helped snowboarding arrive on a bigger stage. After winning the half-pipe in 2006, he came in as a bigger favorite this time around. Shaun White's Olympics 2010 run would have only been shocking if he didn't win - but he quickly slammed the door on that possibly.

White had clinched victory by the time he performed his big new trick: the Double McTwist 1260. It increased his unbeatable score to 48.4, well ahead of the 45.0 by silver medalist Peetu Piiroinen of Finland. The subsequent celebration had coach Bud Keene drop a few curses that were caught by NBC.

White and Keene were clearly unrestrained in their joy - though NBC won't get in trouble for it, since it aired after 11 p.m. But the Shawn White Olympics victory lap was just one of many for America's biggest names.

The Winter Olympics 2010 have struggled to find star power, especially after the ugly way the games started. But yesterday, headlines were made for something other than scandal, as White, Shani Davis and Lindsey Vonn all went for gold, and all won. It also helped America get six medals overall, and retake the overall lead in the medal count.

I still have a picture of Shaun White from the last winter Olympics inside my closet door. I don't understand people who don't love him. I was nervous he'd have a couple bad runs or something - guess that was a waste of worry... And that tomahawk/double mctwist 1260 was insane. Cool to see that after he knew he already had the gold.

did anyone see the video on the TODAY show of kevin pearce an american snowboarder who suffered a horrific head injury before the olympics?~ i guess he & shaun white are friendly rivals & jay had beaten shaun twice in 2009 during competition~ they were both touted as he best in the world & like shaun everyone thought kevin was a shoe in for this years olympic team~

very sad~

yeah, i was about to change the channel, but was glad i didn't~ he has 3 older brothers~ kevin being the youngest~ the brother right above him has down syndrome & is kevin's biggest fan~ kevin's mother said having a child w/ down syndrome, helped her prepare for what happened to kevin~ i doubt he'll compete anymore, but i hope he recovers as much as possible~

That is sad

Snowboarder Kevin Pearce sustained a massive head injury while training Dec. 31 in Park City, Utah. While working on the double cork, Pearce slammed face-first into an icy 22-foot wall of a halfpipe. Pearce was admitted to a Salt Lake City hospital in critical condition and had surgery. He stayed there until this month, when he was transferred to a Colorado facility that specializes in rehabilitating brain and spinal cord injuries.

Monday night, "NBC Nightly News" spoke with Pearce's family for the first time since his injury. Though his family is encouraged, doctor's reports reveal that Pearce has suffered memory loss and impaired vision, and he will have to learn how to walk again. Here's Kevin Tibbles' report.

Though previous reports have said that the 22-year-old Vermont native "is able to walk and do many daily activities with some assistance," this latest story isn't so reassuring. And while it's good to see that Pearce's parents and siblings are confident that Kevin is making progress, it seems that there are still significant improvements to be made.

Pearce's injury is generally considered a fluke, but some think that the sport may be evolving more quickly than its athletes are. With bigger halfpipes and innovators like Shaun White, the pressure to do the best tricks can lead to attempts by those who should not be considering them.

Nonetheless, boarders want the bigger halfpipes, and they want to do bigger tricks. According to Tom Hutchinson, Canada's head snowboarding coach, "it's up to the coach that has to be a little smart sometimes to realize that there's times to do it and times not to." Someone has to say stop, but when they're on the course, who really has control?
